Bulls’ DeMar DeRozan likes where the team is going DeRozan knows it might have been easy for the kids to give up early this season when things were so bleak, but he explained why they kept fighting, which was evident in Saturday’s loss. By Joe Cowley on December 17, 2023 at 5:08 am GMT+1 Twitter Facebook Email ICE Jimmy Butler Jimmy Butler got the last laugh for his former team again on Saturday, but Bulls veteran DeMar DeRozan likes what he sees from the locker room and, he says, more
importantly, coach Billy Donovan and his staff. Lynne Sladky/AP MIAMI – The Bulls could have been easy to let go when
teammate Zach LaVine announced just 12 games into the regular season that he was elsewhere. Heck, they could use any
embarrassing loss in late November. DeMar DeRozan has been around long
enough to see several teams fall into this trap before. “Too much respect and too much pride to make it here,” the veteran
striker said on Saturday. “Too much
respect for the coaches, how hard they work, understanding the time and effort
they put in. Respecting each other, understanding each other’s time and
work. Too much.” That doesn’t mean this team is anywhere close to where
DeRozan thinks it should be. Jimmy Butler and the Heat reminded of that in
Game 2 of the back-to-back when the former Bull hit a 19-footer at the horn to give the home team a 118-116 win. A
heartbreaker? Considering the Bulls (10-17) were down 15 in the second quarter
and 11 to start the fourth with 1:28 left in the game after Coby White’s basket, yes.
But a daunting task at first, too, considering they were without Alex
Caruso (left ankle) again and are now 0-5 in their last five games without Caruso.
This group continued to progress. Whether it was Patrick Williams’ season-high 25 points or another solid game
from White, the guard scored 22 while also grabbing seven rebounds and
dishing out five assists. In the future, according to DeRozan, the coaching work of Billy Donovan and his staff was also
underestimated. The same Donovan whose betting odds saw the first NBA coach fired a few weeks ago this season.
Vice President of Basketball Operations Arturas Karnisovas didn’t even think
about changing coaches after the bad start, and DeRozan insisted the locker
room never lost faith in Donovan. It was nothing more than an overreaction to
outside noise. “I played for Dwane Casey, he was coach of the year,” DeRozan said. โPlaying for Gregg Popovich, probably
one of the greatest coaches of all time, and playing for Billy, my personal
opinion is that he’s right up there with those two guys just because of the respect and the effort that he gets. More
than that, he’s a guy you want to go out with and be successful, not just for yourself, but for him as well. “The love
and respect I have for Billy is exactly the same as I had for the other two guys mentioned. I’ve been lucky throughout
my career to have coaches like that. I tell a lot of young players, you don’t know what you has Never take it for granted
when you have such a great and kind coach, hardworking coach in Billy
because it’s not always greener on the other side. That’s just one of the lessons
DeRozan wants the younger players on the roster to learn. Another more immediate one? Never let Butler do that,
that was the sentiment shared by the entire team after Butler left. “We’ve got to be able to run and catch him,”
Donovan said of the final buzzer. “[Butler] was probably late. We can
definitely learn something from that.” “At
that point, we probably should have sent someone [a double team],” center Nikola
Vucevic said. “We were able to do a lot of things to help us win this game.” Turn off Full screen Jared Goff throws 5 TD passes
