Brendan Fanning Today at 11:48 am Despite the pressure Down Under, Irish

veterans David Nucifora and Joe Schmidt are unlikely to travel to the aid of

Australian rugby. Schmidt has held ongoing discussions with Rugby

Australia about succeeding Eddie Jones, but it is understood he is reluctant to

move across the Tasman and face the Wallabies. Nucifora has been largely

successful as the IRFU’s director of high performance, but it is clear he is unlikely

to join Rugby Australia either when he finishes at Lansdowne Road. In a

previous incarnation, Nucifora served as General Manager of the High Performance Unit of the Australian

Rugby Union (now Rugby Australia), but it did not end well. Rugby Australia will

soon confirm a new senior director, Peter Horne, and while there is support for Nucifora, given the profile of the Irish

side established on his watch, it is clear he does not want to return. in the role that should have been created for him. Rugby Australia will certainly continue

to pursue Schmidt for the Wallabies job, despite their pressure. After getting hammered at the World Cup and losing

Eddie Jones, they are already relegated, preparing for the Lions in two years’

time and then hosting the World Cup in 2027. It is in World Rugby’s interest that both events are competitive on the field

and commercially successful, so a lackluster effort from the Wallabies

hurts everyone’s business. Schmidt is close to Horne – they worked together for World Rugby after he left Ireland – and it

is understood Australia’s Super Rugby chiefs want Schmidt on board, so the pressure to get him over the line will

continue until he specifically rules it out. It is also in New Zealand’s interest that Australian rugby is strong, given the

Super Rugby league and the fact that

they play each other so often at

international level. Since signing with the World Cup All Blacks, Schmidt has

held long-distance talks with American MLR teams and one Super Rugby outfit.

He is also expected to be involved with his home province of Manawatu at some

point, but is not committed to rugby. Promoted links Recommended The
