The majority of athletes want their records to last forever. But Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice wouldn’t mind if Christian McCaffrey, the standout running back, beat one of his long-standing records with the San Francisco 49ers.

Among the many records held by the 49ers, by Rice, is the most touchdowns in a single season. With 22 touchdown receptions in a single season in 1987, the storied wide out set the record. With three games remaining in the 2023 season, McCaffrey has now tallied 20 touchdowns.

This week, Rice was asked if he would mind seeing McCaffrey take ownership of one of his recordings during an interview on The Warner House podcast.

“Yes, I think it’s meant to be broken,” Rice responded to 49ers linebacker Fred Warner, the host. “He’s got it all, man—from scrimmage to rushing the ball to catching it to scoring touchdowns—what he brings to the table is unmatched.”

So, everything is OK. I have a lot of records now, you know? Sharing some of those documents is fine with me, Rice continued.

With his incredible 2023 season, Christian McCaffrey is seen as one of the favorites to take home the NFL MVP trophy. McCaffrey leads the league in both rushing and receiving touchdowns (20) and yards from scrimmage (1,801) through 14 games played.

  • McCaffrey may take his record, but Rice still has a lot left. Most of the NFL’s receiving records are held by him, including as the most catches (1,549), receiving yards (22,895), and receiving touchdowns (197).
