To succeed on the field, one occasionally needs a little bit of luck. At times, talent and the film study are the most important factors. For Charvarius Ward, Week 15 consisted of a little bit of everything.
Following the team’s bye week, the cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers has elevated his game, which culminated in a fantastic road effort against the Arizona Cardinals. Last Sunday, Ward concluded Week 15 with a total of three tackles, two interceptions, and two pass break-ups. The Mississippi native made history by recording two picks in a single game, and by the conclusion of 2023, both his team and the national media will be presenting him with flowers.
He’s playing, in my opinion, at that All-Pro level right now. And with his two picks last week, you saw that, as I have seen it all year, 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said on Friday regarding Charvarius Ward.
The 49ers brought in the defensive back, known by his nickname “Mooney,” to serve as their lockdown man both on and off the field. That seems to be the case as we enter the second year of a three-year contract, leading the NFL in PBUs (22).
But Wilks and Company were struck by one play in particular, which resulted in Ward’s first career pick-six.
The Cardinals’ quarterback, Kyler Murray, found tight end Trey McBride over the middle on a fourth down. But Ward was focused the entire time. In the first quarter, he raced past the home side and jumped the route, scoring 66 yards.

Just a few days prior, Mooney revealed, he had gone to 49ers backup Sam Darnold for catching drills in an attempt to convert those PBUs into interceptions. The outcomes came about quite instantly.
