Playoff Dreams Delayed: 49ers’ Quest for the Top Seed in the NFC Hits a Roadblock

The 49ers will have to wait another week for the top seed in the NFC

Week 16, the San Francisco 49ers had a chance to grab the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Unfortunately, that chance was ruined after the first games on Sunday. The 49ers needed the Detroit Lions to lose as the first step to victory. After that, it would take the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles to lose. The Lions defeated the Minnesota Vikings earlier today, ending any scenario of the 49ers locking up the No. 1 seed. Kind of confusing now that the Cowboys lost to the Dolphins. That would have made the scenario even more likely for the 49ers in Monday night’s Christmas Day game against the Baltimore Ravens. San Francisco will have to wait another week to claim the #1 seed in the NFC. It was always hard for them to get that chance anyway. Losing to three playoff teams in the same week was a stretch. Then the 49ers would have to beat a strong Ravens team. It’s actually better for the 49ers. It’s early enough to be up after two games this week. That would have created a situation where the 49ers might have let their foot off the gas. The last time they did that was after Week 5 when they destroyed the cowboys. A three-game losing streak followed, which remains their only three-game losing streak of the season. Better to get the #1 pick with a game left, or even late in the season to keep the 49ers focused on the playoffs.
