After his monster game helped the Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings and win their first division title in 30 years, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs got an early Christmas present from the NFL — a random drug test. Gibbs rushed for 100 yards in his team’s 30–24 victory on December 24. The win clinched the NFC North championship for the Lions. After the game, Gibbs took to social media to share a photo of the league’s mandatory drug test and a troll message to the league.
The Lions’ rookie is having a historic season Gibbs had a strong all-around game against the Vikings. He rushed 15 times for 80 yards with two touchdowns and added a 20-yard catch. The first-round pick has now scored a touchdown in three straight games, helping the Lions make two of three road trips.
Saturday’s win allowed them to win their first division title since 1993 and secure at least one home game in the playoffs. The rookie now has 872 yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 51 catches for 316 yards and a receiving touchdown.
As noted by WXYZ, Gibbs is having a historic season for the Lions, passing Mel Farr for the fifth most yards by a rookie with two games remaining. “He is also the third rookie in franchise history to have more than 1,000 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in a season, joining Barry Sanders (1989) and Billy Sims (1980),” the report said. ”
He also has 13 catches of 50+ yards this season, third most by a rookie RB in team history.” Dan Campbell is behind Rookie The Lions initially drew criticism for their decision to draft Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick, with critics pointing out that the team had more defensive needs and that using high draft picks on quarterbacks was a far-fetched idea.
The Lions also drew criticism for their decision to take tight end Sam LaPorta early in the second round. After Gibbs scored two touchdowns in a 42-17 win against the Denver Broncos on Dec.
16 and LaPorta added three field goals, Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised the Detroit head coach and his decision to make a pair of draft picks. “I’ll just take it back to Brad Holmes; another hell of a job by him,” Campbell told the Detroit News. “I got a lot of criticism for those two picks, but they seem good, so I’m glad we got them.”
LaPorta is in the midst of his retirement season. He has 74 receptions for 776 yards and nine touchdowns, the fourth most yards among all receivers and the most by a rookie tight end.
