On Tuesday afternoon, it was announced that the player and the team agreed to a one-year contract. While the move won’t be finalized until Wednesday, the addition of a new defensive tackle is considered an upgrade with several members already on the injury report.
NFL Network insider and former safety Jason McCourty was the first to break the news, and local outlets later confirmed it. It can be confirmed that the 49ers have signed Joseph-Day and bolstered the interior of their defensive line with Arik Armstead out with a foot injury.

Pennsylvania has 31 combined tackles, 11 quarterback hits and three sacks in 2023.
He has 224 career tackles, which shows his ability to stop the run in the trenches. Joseph-Day is also a Super Bowl champion with the Los Angeles Rams. The deal came after the Chargers waived him after Week 14. To the surprise of many, “SJD” is now heading north to Santa Clara to begin another deep postseason run.
For the 49ers, it’s a sign that starting DT Arik Armstead is still battling injuries. Armstead has missed the last few games with foot problems, like the plantar fasciitis he suffered last season. Backup starter Javon Hargrave also missed the season with a hamstring injury.
After giving up 33 points to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16, the addition of Joseph-Day should at least help the 49ers stop the run. The deal is expected to be officially announced on Wednesday and the role has yet to be defined.
