The chase for the NFC’s top playoff spot by the 49ers could have received an unexpected assist from NFL officials who made a contentious decision during the Dallas Cowboys’ narrow 20-19 victory against the Detroit Lions on Saturday night.
Lions coach Dan Campbell displayed bravery when he chose to go for a two-point conversion after a Jared Goff touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown narrowed the score at AT&T Stadium. The decision paid off when offensive lineman Taylor Decker successfully caught a pass from Goff on a trick play for the winning points.
However, the play did not count, as the referees ruled that Decker, who they claimed did not declare himself as an eligible receiver, committed an illegal touch. Despite the Lions’ protests, their objections were unsuccessful, and in the end, they were unable to convert the two-point attempt, resulting in a bitter defeat.
If the 49ers (11-4) defeat the Washington Commanders and the Philadelphia Eagles (11-4) are defeated by the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers will secure the NFC’s No. 1 seed as the Lions slip to 11-5.
