MIAMI: The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Detroit Lions 20-19 despite a contentious ending to guarantee that they finish the season with a perfect home record.
Amon-Ra St. Brown caught an 11-yard touchdown throw from Jared Goff with 23 seconds left in the match between two teams already guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, and the Lions were within one point of tying the score with Dallas leading 20–13.
Head coach Dan Campbell of Detroit, true to his philosophy, decided not to settle for the extra point but to go for two and grab the lead.
When Goff found lineman Taylor Decker in the end zone for the two scores, it appeared that the play had paid off, but the referee determined that Decker had been an ineligible receiver. The Lions angrily contested the ruling, claiming that Decker had reported in accordance with the regulations, which stipulate that players who aren’t often receivers—like offensive lineman Decker—must report as eligible receivers.
Though Goff was intercepted, the Cowboys were penalized for offside this time, as Campbell refused to back down from the play’s repetition penalty back to the seven-yard line.
Following that, Campbell refused to back down, giving the Lions a third opportunity to score two points, but James Mitchell was unable to bring down Goff’s throw.
By the conclusion of the game, Campbell was incensed.
The rationale was that 70 (Dan Skipper) reported and 68 (Decker) didn’t, according to Campbell, who maintained that Decker had reported as eligible and the referees had made a mistake.
Decker claimed to have reported on time.
To avoid any trouble, all he wanted to say was that he followed his coach’s instructions exactly and went to the referee, saying, “Report. You can see the video of it.”
Before the two-point try, Decker and Skipper can be seen approaching the referee separately in the video.
The Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, who are vying for the top spot in the conference with two games left, both have 11-5 records as a consequence of the outcome.
After a stumbling quarterback Dak Prescott found CeeDee Lamb on the 50-yard line and he ran home for a 92-yard touchdown, Dallas had established a commanding 7-3 lead.
David Montgomery’s three-yard rush gave Detroit the lead, but Prescott’s eight-yard touchdown toss to Brandin Cooks and the dependable Brandon Aubrey’s 43-yard field goal placed Dallas in the driver’s seat.
Lamb’s achievements were slightly overshadowed by the late drama, as he surpassed Michael Irvin to record the most receiving yards in a season with 1,604 yards.
It is all-important. With his 112th reception of the year, Lamb overtook watching Irvin for the most receptions in a season. “It means all the work that me and my guys put in is showing,” Lamb remarked.
