After securing a victory against the Washington Commanders, the San Francisco 49ers have obtained the top seed, earning the privilege of home field advantage and a bye in the NFC playoffs. As they have one game left in the regular season, it is likely that the 49ers will choose to rest certain players.
Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco team, announced on Monday that their star running back, Christian McCaffrey, will be unable to play in the Week 18 game against the Los Angeles Rams because of a slight calf strain.
Shanahan assured that McCaffrey’s injury is not severe and anticipates his availability for the team’s initial playoff match.
Shanahan expressed his optimism to reporters on Monday, emphasizing that the news regarding the injury was positive. He mentioned that the situation could have been much more severe, and the team is relieved that the necessary measures will be taken to ensure his recovery. Shanahan stated that the player will receive proper care throughout the week and hopefully begin participating in practice during the off week.
McCaffrey’s advantage of having a first-round bye in the playoffs is that he will have ample time, two whole weeks, to receive treatment and get ready for the upcoming playoff match. For the divisional round playoff game on either January 20 or 21, the 49ers will take part.
McCaffrey suffered a calf injury in the third quarter of the 49ers’ 27-10 victory against the Commanders. Prior to leaving the game, he had accumulated a total of 64 rushing yards on 16 attempts and made four receptions for 27 yards. McCaffrey did not make a comeback after his injury.
McCaffrey is currently at the top of the NFL with his highest-ever 1,459 rushing yards and 2,023 yards overall. He is tied with Raheem Mostert from the Miami team for the most touchdowns in the league, with a total of 21.
