Although it may not have been the initial intention, quarterback Sam Howell is set to start all 17 games for the Commanders this season.
The head coach of the Commanders, Ron Rivera, revealed on Wednesday that Howell will be the starting quarterback in the team’s last game of the season against the Cowboys. This will mark the first time since 2017, when Kirk Cousins was leading the team, that a Washington quarterback has started every game in a season.
Howell was taken out of two consecutive games and was supposed to be replaced in Week 17. However, Jacoby Brissett injured his hamstring during practice, which led to Howell staying in the lineup against the 49ers. Brissett’s participation as the backup this weekend is uncertain as he had limited involvement in Wednesday’s practice.
After the 2024 season ends, it is highly anticipated that Rivera will be let go, which means that another coach will probably determine how much playing time Howell receives. Howell will aim to showcase his abilities on film before the Commanders commence their offseason engagements.
