With the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2023 season’s conclusion may mark the end of an era in a number of ways.
The question of whether Kenny Pickett will remain the franchise quarterback for the Steelers is already being debated by NFL media pundits. However, according per Gerry Dulac of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cameron Heyward, the 34-year-old defensive lineman and captain of the club, has a far less certain future with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Although Heyward has the right to terminate his career on his terms, Dulac stated in a conversation on January 3 that this may not be possible due to the significant amount of money the veteran is owed in 2024.
Dulac added, “I believe Cam has earned the right to return for the final year of his contract with the Steelers, if he so chooses.” But there’s little doubt he’ll have to redo his contract if he does.
“He will probably have to take a lot less money for his final season because he is expected to make $16 million in salary and count $22.4 million against the cap.”
Heyward is projected to take up 9.1% of the team’s salary space after that cap hit. For a defensive lineman who turns 35 in May and has had the fewest sacks and tackles this season since 2012, that’s a lot of accomplishments.
