This week, in anticipation of the season finale against the Rams, in which Darnold will make his first start of the year after the 49ers decided to rest Brock Purdy in order to prepare for the postseason, the mutual admiration society between the two players was evident. Purdy has earned it; in his second NFL season, he will be selected to the Pro Bowl in addition to being a candidate for MVP.
However, he is aware that Darnold is the focal point of Week 18, and in an interview with reporters this week, he thanked Darnold for helping him learn the ins and outs of researching opponents and gaining a broader perspective on the game.
At his weekly press conference, Purdy stated, “Obviously, he has been a guy who has been here in this league for, I think it’s his sixth year now.” Just the method, the schedule, the way he studies, the concepts he’s seeing, and the way he’s handled things in the past. He has been able to support me and pour into me in that way. .. He brings up these insignificant details, but as a quarterback, they mean a lot to me he is obviously talking about positive things on the sidelines and other things, notably behaviors he’s seen on film that they might perform during the game and should keep in mind. Thus, he’s performed incredibly well.
Of course, part of the reason Darnold signed with the 49ers during the summer was the considerable doubt surrounding the appearance of Brock Purdy as the starting quarterback. In the NFC title game, Purdy had an elbow injury that necessitated surgery. He had made just eight starts throughout the regular season. However, Purdy returned this season and was selected for the Pro Bowl.
