Javon Hargrave, a defensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, was selected to the Pro Bowl the previous season before agreeing to a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason.
Hargrave made some very critical remarks about the Eagles after spending time with both squads. A tape from their talk surfaced during Hargrave’s recent appearance on the Third and Long podcast, which is hosted by fellow 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead. In it, Armstead asked Hargrave what the largest cultural difference was between Philadelphia and San Francisco.
Hargrave first said that the two teams were extremely similar.
“I’m sorry to say, but… In my opinion, there are similarities between San Francisco and Philadelphia, as everyone there is quite close to one another. However, I can say that the practices are like, really hard,” he remarked.
Hargrave then clarified which team he was referring to when Armstead pressed him to name it, describing the 49ers’ practices as “more demanding.” The former D-lineman for the Eagles acknowledged he was speaking to San Francisco.
Then Hargrave made an analogy to basketball. He made the comparison between the Niners and the Miami Heat, an NBA team known for its great locker room and general culture, and the Eagles and the Warriors.
Eagles culture is “more chill, more relaxed,” according to the former defensive end for the team. This way? It requires labor. All day long.
“It’s definitely not feasible for everyone to make it here,” he continued, referring to San Francisco.
