Although the New York Jets have stated clearly that they do not intend to change their coaching staff this offseason, several excellent prospects have become available. The most recent well-known name to add himself to that list is Mike Vrabel.
Vrabel’s excellent six-year tenure with the Tennessee Titans came to an abrupt end on Tuesday when the team made the contentious decision to remove him. Vrabel is anticipated to be among the most sought-after coaching prospects in recent memory
He joins an elite group of head coach hopefuls that includes Jim Harbaugh, Ben Johnson, Raheem Morris, Mike MacDonald, and possibly even Bill Belichick.
Even though the Jets may need to start searching for a new head coach as early as next year, the last of those five names is particularly concerning for the Jets and the AFC East as a whole.
As the Patriots’ next head coach, Mike Vrabel might come back to haunt the NY Jets.
Bill Belichick’s future with the New England Patriots is still up in the air, but it seems more and more likely that the team is prepared to let him go. Maybe it’s the dismissal of Vrabel that puts them on the brink.
Since he was a member of the Patriots from 2001 to 2008, Rabel has maintained close relationships with the franchise. Over the years, New England has made no secret of its interest in hiring him as a coach. Here, it doesn’t take much to make the connections.
Since Vrabel is currently available, the Patriots have long considered him as a possible Belichick replacement. This would be the ideal opportunity for New England to make the move.
In the NFL, Vrabel is still regarded as one of the most esteemed and respected coaches. In his first four seasons as head coach, he assisted in leading the Titans to four straight winning seasons, which included a 2019 AFC Conference Game trip and a 2021 season with twelve wins.
You could very well argue that Vrabel has still managed to overachieve with an incompetent Titans club each of the last two seasons, even though the team’s troubles this season have mostly been caused by a lack of overall talent.
Regarding the Patriots, they are going through a moment of transition after having their worst season in more than thirty years. Over the past few years, Belichick has, very frankly, overstayed his welcome and caused significant harm to the organization. They have long been among the poorest drafting teams in the league.
With the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots are set to potentially add their quarterback of the future. And now they may also sign a top-tier head coach. After bottoming out for one season, this is hardly a bad comeback.
Following his unexpected departure from Nashville, Vrabel’s most likely destination seems to be New England. The Jets and the AFC East can’t be content.
