Matthew Stafford expressed his enthusiasm about coming back to Detroit for the wild card game on January 14; however, certain Lions fans are not particularly keen on seeing excessive admiration for their ex-quarterback.
According to SI.com’s John Maakaron, a group of fans has initiated a movement to prohibit Stafford jerseys during the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams, which hasn’t received positive feedback from Kelly Stafford, Matthew’s wife, who expressed her dissatisfaction with the campaign recently.
Stafford bid a heartfelt farewell to the Lions in 2021, posting an emotional video after his trade to the Rams. However, there are fans who feel uncomfortable seeing others wearing their old Detroit Stafford jerseys during Sunday’s game.
Kelly Stafford expressed her disappointment with the campaign, stating that it contradicted the strong bond of goodwill that she and her husband have with the city and the team that selected him as the first overall pick in 2009. She added that although they view the situation as unfortunate, Matthew Stafford always takes the higher road and will continue to do so. She concluded by saying that she hopes for a game filled with excellence and devoid of any injuries.
The Lions will be playing their first home playoff game in 30 years this weekend as they won their first-ever NFC North title and division win since 1993. Stafford expressed his excitement for the game, mentioning that it will be held in Detroit and expecting a lively atmosphere.
Stafford expressed his desire to express gratitude to the organization and the individuals he got to know during his 12-year tenure in Detroit. Although he won’t be representing the team anymore, he looks forward to reconnecting with familiar faces and acknowledging the support he received throughout his career.
Stafford experienced personal achievements during his 12-year tenure in Detroit, amassing 45,109 yards and 282 touchdowns, earning two Pro Bowl appearances. However, the team’s triumphs were scarce, as they reached the playoffs merely three times and were eliminated in the first round on each occasion.
Upon joining the Rams, Stafford quickly tasted success, guiding the team to a Super Bowl championship in his inaugural season as the starting quarterback. Although there was a decline in performance in 2022, the Rams bounced back and secured a playoff berth this year, finishing the season with a 10-7 record.
