The Washington Commanders have completed their season, finishing as the second-worst team in the NFL. As a result, they have secured the second overall pick in the upcoming draft. This valuable opportunity will assist the future administration in rebuilding the team, despite further affecting Head Coach Ron Rivera’s job security.
Rivera was appointed on January 1, 2020 when the team was still known as the Washington Redskins. Facing criticism and economic challenges from various sources, Dan Snyder sought a reputable individual to assume control of the team and address lingering inquiries. Following his dismissal by the Carolina Panthers after losing to the Redskins, Rivera swiftly assumed the role of head coach in Washington. Snyder desired an organizational structure centered around the coach, and Rivera was eager to exert his own approach in leading the team.
After a span of four years and two team name changes, Washington managed to win the division and qualify for the playoffs only once during Rivera’s tenure, without ever achieving a winning record. Interestingly, the team lacked any Pro Bowlers this season and endured a woeful period, concluding with eight consecutive losses. Rivera’s dismissal, which occurred yesterday, was long overdue. Yesterday, Josh Harris, the managing partner, addressed the media and shared his strategy for finding a new general manager and head coach who would guide the team towards a brighter future.
