Five Lions named for the 2023 All-Pro squad

A total of five players selected for the Pro Bowl and seven alternates. Associated Press All-Pro honors was awarded to five players on Friday. Center Frank Ragnow, tight end Sam LaPorta, and special teamer Jalen Reeves-Maybin were named to the second team, while tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown were named to the first team.

Sewell, 23, is one of the most dominant tackles in the league in just his third season. He is selected for the first time ever by AP All-Pro. This season, the Lions have only allowed 31 sacks on 646 dropbacks (4.8 percent), which is the fourth-best rate in the NFL. Playing both left and right tackle, Sewell is the NFL’s finest run-blocking tackler. This season, he has only given up one sack and fourteen hurries.

Although the AP ranks St. Brown as one of the best in the league at his position, he was selected as a first alternate for the Pro Bowl this season. His first selection to the All-Pro team. St. Brown, 24, was third in receiving yards (1,515), third in touchdowns (10) and third in first-down catches (75). This season, he led the NFL in 100-yard receiving games (9) and tied for second in receptions (119). With three hundred and fifteen receptions throughout a player’s first three seasons of play, he is third in NFL history.

The 27-year-old Ragnow received his second All-Pro selection (2020) and was selected to his third Pro Bowl this season. He serves as the focal point of one of the NFL’s top offensive lines. For the second straight season, Detroit’s offense has amassed 2,000 rushing yards and 4,000 throwing yards. Their 27 running touchdowns tied Miami and San Francisco for the most in the league and set a franchise record. Pro Football Focus ranks Ragnow as the best center in the NFL this season, and he has only allowed one sack all season.

LaPorta, 22, is having one of the best rookie seasons for a tight end in NFL history. He broke the record set by Keith Jackson (1988) for the most receptions (86) by a rookie tight end in a season. During the regular season, he had 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. This season, he ranked first in touchdowns, sixth in yards, and fourth among all tight ends in receptions. It’s quite the accomplishment to be recognized in his debut season as an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection.

In his second season with the Lions, 28-year-old Reeves-Maybin has seven years of experience. Being one of the league’s finest special teams players, he was selected for the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro team for the first time this season. With thirteen special teams tackles so far this season, he is now tied for the most. Additionally, he played a key role in a few punt fake conversions. During a fake punt in Week 1, he rushed for a three-yard gain to convert a fourth and two. He pulled off another great fake punt conversion in Week 17, finding cornerback Khalil Dorsey for 31 yards on a 4th & 2 pass.
