Did a former NFL official criticise 49ers’ Brock Purdy?

Amy Trask, a widely respected former NFL executive and current football pundit, appeared to take a swipe at San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy during the most recent episode of the “What the Football” podcast.

“Four games, eight quarterbacks,” Trask stated about the upcoming divisional round of the playoffs. “Seven terrific quarterbacks and Brock Purdy.”

The numbers clearly show that such a judgement is unfair to Purdy. According to ESPN statistics, the 24-year-old, who spent much of the autumn as a potential Most Valuable Player candidate, finished the regular season leading the league among qualifying players with a 72.7 adjusted QBR, 113.0 passer rating, and 9.6 yards per pass attempt. He also ranked third in terms of aerial touchdowns with 31.

Purdy is no stranger to claims that he is a “game manager” rather than a “game-changing” signal-caller who has yet to demonstrate his ability to consistently play at an elite level. His next chance to refute critics will come on Saturday night, when the top-seeded 49ers visit the Green Bay Packers.

The trend of Purdy receiving bulletin board material appears to be continuing, even if he leads San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game for the second time in his first two seasons. As of late Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the 49ers as huge 9.5-point favourites against the Packers.
