The San Francisco 49ers prepare for their first NFL playoff game this season, against the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round. The 49ers earned the No. 1 seed, so they will be well-rested for this game, whereas the Packers are coming off a loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Green Bay did something unusual to begin their victory by winning the coin toss and choosing to receive rather than deferring until the second half, as most teams do. It worked out since they scored a touchdown to start the game, which marked the beginning of the end for the Cowboys. Love would end the game passing for 272 yards along with his three touchdown passes.
The media asked San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan on Thursday if the idea is to take the ball out of Love’s hands to open the game. He said without hesitation, “Nope.”
Shanahan appears to dismiss the idea of developing rhythm to start the game, arguing that a team can acquire momentum at any point during the game. According to Kevin Patra of NFL.com, the head coach stated that playing “good football” dictates whether or not you will score.
