DC was Sirianni’s choice. Former DC Jonathan Gannon and OC Shane Steichen will be replaced by Sean Desai and OC Brian Johnson, who were both hired as head coaches last season. Desai was hired externally, while Johnson was elevated from QB coach.
But according to Vacchiano, Lurie has changed his mind about Sirianni’s decisions after first supporting them last year. Sirianni has brought in top offensive assistant Matt Patricia to replace Desai as the Eagles collapsed from a 10-1 start to an 11-6 record and a first-round playoff loss.
According to Vacchiano, there is a perception within the organisation that Sirianni made a mistake in selecting Desai rather than elevating DB coach Dennard Wilson, who subsequently parted ways with the Ravens. Wilson might run this year for the DC position, he continues.
Johnson’s relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts played a key in his promotion to the offensive line. But according to Vacchiano, there are indications that the connection has also worsened.
Hurts audibly exited many of Johnson’s calls later in the season, according to a team source, and the two were frequently at odds. He also mentioned that Johnson’s propensity to give up on the running game was a source of irritation.
All in all, after a promising season went horribly wrong, Sirianni and the Eagles have a lot of questions to answer.
The 36-year-old Johnson began his coaching career in 2010 at Utah as the quarterbacks coach. After rising to the position of offensive coordinator, he left to take a position coaching quarterbacks at Mississippi State in 2014.
After that, Johnson had stints at Florida and Houston until being appointed as the QB coach by the Eagles in 2021.
In 2023, Johnson was elevated by the Eagles to the position of offensive coordinator.
Under Johnson, the Eagles offence placed eighth in total yards and seventh in points in 2023. They also were eighth in rushing yards and sixteenth in passing yards.
Patricia, 48, started his NFL coaching career in 2004 with the Patriots as an offensive assistant. Before being elevated to defensive coordinator in 2012, he worked as an assistant offensive line coach, a linebackers coach, and a safeties coach during his 14 years in New England.
