Israel Idonije was a member of the most recent Bears team that competed in the Super Bowl.
Despite his retirement ten years ago, he continues to have a significant influence in Chicago through his ventures as an entrepreneur, comic book creator, and through his philanthropic work. Now, he is expanding into the restaurant industry with Signature, located in the South Loop. This new endeavor allows Idonije to merge his love for sports with his business acumen, all while maintaining his commitment to giving back to the community. Perhaps due to his background as a defensive end, even in the business world, Idonije is known for his swift and decisive actions.
I wanted to finish this project in four months so that I could enjoy a portion of the Bears season before it was over,” Idonije explained. “We enlisted the help of designers and others to improve the area and even hired 53 new employees. Just like my previous efforts, this venture aims to give back to the community, aligning with the establishment of my foundation in 2007.
Some of the money we make will be donated to an Impact Fund that aims to address the issue of food insecurity in our city. Whenever there is a chance to express gratitude and appreciation to those who have supported us throughout the ups and downs of our business for the past decade, we want to take the opportunity. Your unwavering support for our franchise and brand means a lot to us, and we are grateful for it.
Idonije was determined to secure a starting position in the NFL and his perseverance in vying for a spot on the roster taught him valuable lessons about entrepreneurship.
He expressed his desire to incorporate these principles and insights into the Signature team and its overall culture. He emphasized the importance of fostering a winning mentality, regardless of one’s role within the company, whether they are a dishwasher or a front or back house team member. Making a contribution and seizing opportunities to excel are key factors in achieving success as a brand and as a company.
One of the things that Idonije was most excited about was the sight of Signature filled with Bears fans on Sunday. He believes that after an offseason of improvements, the team is ready to progress further. He mentioned that defensively, they took a step in the right direction throughout the season and made some moves. He also mentioned that coaching-wise, more changes are coming. He expressed his anticipation for the upcoming draft and the strategic leadership that will help build the team without any regression. Idonije believes that if they can get one step closer, the team will be in excellent shape as they had many close games that they lost.
Idonije will have a one-of-a-kind experience next season as he observes the Bears’ attempt to secure a “Signature” victory. He will be embarking on a new venture called Signature with chef Stephen Gillanders, which is located in the South Loop. This restaurant may be far from Idonije’s football roots in Manitoba, but it is conveniently close to Soldier Field where he once played as a member of the Bears.
