49ers’ offensive weapon might play a bigger role in NFC Championship Game

The big issue for the San Francisco 49ers heading into the NFC Championship Game was whether standout wide receiver Deebo Samuel would be able to play after hurting his shoulder against the Packers. Not only is he anticipated to play and be taken from the injured list, but his role may also expand.

On Friday, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that Samuel “might” be employed on kickoff returns, which would simply be another method for him to get the ball in his hands and make plays.

Samuel has played this role just on a few occasions throughout his career. He returned six kicks during the 2023 season and three in the 2021 season. On those nine total returns, he has an average of 25.4 yards.

Samuel was restricted in practice for the majority of the week due to a shoulder ailment, putting his participation for Sunday’s game against Detroit in jeopardy. That was a huge source of concern for the 49ers because their offence has looked so different this season when he hasn’t played. Quarterback Brock Purdy has also struggled during those games. San Francisco’s — and Purdy’s — worst games this season occurred in late October, when he was injured, and the 49ers offence suffered in last week’s divisional playoff game after he was removed.

Samuel is one of the NFL’s most versatile offensive players because he can impact both the passing and running games.

He concluded the 2023 season with 60 receptions for 892 yards and seven touchdowns, in addition to 225 yards and five scores on 37 carries.
