The Rams have had an assistant coach take over as head coach for the seventh time in Sean McVay’s seven-year tenure. The most recent to jump, Raheem Morris, was hired by the Falcons. The Rams are currently figuring out how to replace him.
There are two well-known names among them. Apart from contemplating a reunion with Brandon Staley, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic suggests Ejiro Evero will be a formidable contender for the job. However, there is still the issue of the Panthers releasing Evero from his contract.
Evero, a Rams assistant from 2017 to 21, has witnessed a sharp rise in his stature despite having led two losing defensive teams as their coordinator. Evero, who spent 2022 with the 5-12 Broncos, interviewed for every HC position that opened up last year and subsequently rose to the top of the coordinator candidate pool.
According to HC interviews that have since occurred, Evero was unaffected by the Panthers’ 2–15 record. Though it seems likely that Evero will serve as a coordinator for three different teams in the next three years, the Panthers have already expressed interest in keeping him. Carolina denied Jacksonville’s desire to meet with Evero on their DC job before hiring Dave Canales. Although it’s uncertain if Canales will keep Evero on as DC despite hiring a new coach, it wouldn’t be shocking if the team stuck to its principles and kept Evero as DC despite Dan Morgan moving up the ranks to the GM position.
And at least one contender who has never worked with McVay before has emerged. According to Todd Archer of ESPN.com, the Rams requested a meeting with Aden Durde, the defensive line coach for the Cowboys, regarding the position. Durde joined the Cowboys’ staff three years ago, having come from Atlanta to replace Dan Quinn. Englishman Durde participated in the NFL’s foreign route program, helping players develop in the United Kingdom, before joining the Falcons halfway through Quinn’s career.
