In 2024, Jalen Hurts will have a new position coach in addition to a new offensive coordinator.
According to NFL source Jeremy Fowler, quarterbacks coach Alex Tanney of the Philadelphia Eagles is “free to explore other coaching opportunities” that he “has them and asked to look into them.”
That interpretation is more endearing than the more likely truth that the Eagles wanted Tanney gone as part of their offensive coaching staff restructuring.
After the 2020 season, Tanney, then 36, announced his retirement from the game. In 2021, he joined Nick Sirianni’s staff as an offensive quality control coach. In 2022, he was elevated to the position of offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach. In 2023, he succeeded Brian Johnson as quarterbacks coach.
The Eagles are not happy with Hurts’ decline and will look to hire a new quarterback coach to assist him get back on track. We’ll see if the appointment of Philly’s new OC affects who gets that position.
Regarding other coaching updates, it has been reported that the Carolina Panthers have asked to interview Marcus Brady, the senior offensive assistant with the Eagles, for the position of offensive coordinator. We’ll have to wait and see, but our best guess is that he may be in a similar circumstance to Tanney (i.e., “free to explore other opportunities”).
Sirianni claimed that the Eagles offense had become “a little bit stale” and that they are searching for “new ideas.” Thus, the team is searching for fresh offensive personnel.
