The Washington Commanders’ coaching search is the lengthiest one happening during the 2024 NFL offseason. However, with just two head-coaching positions left to fill, it seems that the Commanders’ organization might already have a candidate in mind for the upcoming year. Following the dismissal of head coach Ron Rivera, Washington wasted no time in rebuilding their football operations. Among the numerous offers he received from other NFL teams, Adam Peters was appointed as the new general manager for the Commanders.
Peters, who previously served as the assistant general manager for the San Francisco 49ers, is highly regarded as one of the top talent evaluators in the NFL. He is praised for his ability to scout and identify talented players in the later rounds of the NFL Draft. Although the Commanders were able to secure Peters as their new roster architect, they still needed to find a head coach.
To fill the vacant head coach position, the Commanders have interviewed a wide range of candidates, including Bobby Slowik, the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, Dan Quinn, the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, and Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. However, it appears that Washington might already have a plan in place for their next head coach, as an announcement is expected in the coming days.
According to Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, it is being discussed at the Shrine Bowl practices that Ben Johnson, the current offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, is likely to become the head coach for the Commanders once the Lions’ season is over. Johnson is highly regarded as one of the top coaching candidates in the NFL and has received interest from several teams, including the Carolina Panthers. However, similar to Peters, Johnson has been waiting for the perfect opportunity before parting ways with the Lions.
The Commanders seem to be the chosen team for him. Although Washington is still considering other candidates, they plan to conduct a personal interview with Johnson after the NFC Championship Game next week. It is anticipated that once this interview takes place, the process of officially hiring him will progress swiftly.
Johnson would be entering a favorable scenario as the Commanders possess a remarkable pair of receivers in Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, thereby offering their future signal-caller an even superior pass-catching combination in comparison to his time in Detroit. Consequently, Johnson and Peters would have the opportunity to decide which quarterback they prefer, potentially opting for either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye, who are the probable choices with the second overall pick.
Acquiring Johnson and Peters would be a significant stride for a franchise that has not experienced a playoff victory in nearly twenty years. Previously associated with controversies and letdowns, the Commanders now have the chance to greatly improve their NFL offseason in 2024 if they enter the next season with Peters, Johnson, and either Maye or Daniels.
