Jauan Jennings was ranked higher as a QB recruit than both of the starting quarterbacks in Super Bowl LVIII

Super Bowl LVIII will pit Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes against San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Mahomes has already established himself as a future Hall of Famer, while Purdy, who was relatively unknown before taking over as the 49ers’ starting quarterback late in the season as a rookie in 2022, is hoping to strengthen his case as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

Another Super Bowl victory for Mahomes places him among the two or three all-time greats of the game. Purdy’s win can pave the way for him to eventually enter that conversation.

Coming out of high school, Mahomes and Purdy were not regarded as future NFL stars, since neither was ranked highly. They were both 3-star prospects. Mahomes was ranked the No. 389 overall player in the 2014 recruiting class and the No. 22 pro-style quarterback in the country. Purdy was ranked No. 839 overall in the 2018 recruiting class and No. 36 pro-style quarterback nationally.

Surprisingly, 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings was ranked better as a QB recruit than both Mahomes and Purdy.

Jennings, a four-star prospect, was ranked as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the country and No. 89 overall in the 2015 recruiting class.

As a true freshman at Tennessee, Jennings moved to wide receiver (he caught the Vols’ first pass in his first game).

Jennings did get to showcase his throwing abilities at Tennessee, completing a touchdown pass to Josh Dobbs against Florida in 2015.
