Peter King Names 49ers Interesting Candidate for DC Job

Just days after their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers made the bold and some say questionable move of firing defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

It opened the door for them to make a big splash if they think outside the box and if some people accept the role.

NBC Sports’ Peter King said on 95.7 The Game that Pete Carroll would be an “interesting” candidate to be San Francisco’s defensive coordinator.

Most know Carroll as the longtime head coach of the Seattle Seahawks who led them to a World Series title ten years ago.

At the time, the Seahawks had a heated rivalry with the 49ers, and that season they beat San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game thanks to a late interception by star cornerback Richard Sherman.

But Carroll was also the 49ers’ defensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996, and he’s also a Bay Area native who began his coaching career at the University of the Pacific in the 1970s.

He left the Seahawks last month after 14 seasons as their head coach, and even though he’s in his early 70s, he still seems to have plenty of energy.

The Niners need a defensive coordinator who excels not only at strategy, but also at leading and motivating his guys, just like DeMeco Ryans did in 2021 and 2022.

In 2022, they were the best defensive team in the NFL. , but there has been some slippage this season, and it was especially evident in the playoffs..
