It’s the Boston Red Sox who are dispelling myths about Ippei Mizuhara. The Red Sox released a statement on Friday refuting any prior connections to Mizuhara.
The recently fired Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter due to charges of theft and unlawful betting. The topic was covered by a number of media outlets, some of which falsely claimed that Mizuhara had also served as Hideki Okajima’s interpreter during his time as a Red Sox pitcher.
“[Various reports state] Ippei Mizuhara worked for the Red Sox as an interpreter, which is incorrect,” a Red Sox spokesperson said, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “Mizuhara was never employed by the Boston Red Sox in any capacity and was not an interpreter for Hideki Okajima during the pitcher’s time with the team.”
According to Mizuhara’s Wikipedia article, the Red Sox hired him as an interpreter for Okajima after he graduated from college. This information is still current. The referenced source, a 2021 piece from the Japanese publication Nippon.com, said that Mizuhara provided Okajima’s 2010 interpretation (Okajima pitched for the Red Sox from 2007-11). The Japan Times, the Associated Press, and the Los Angeles Times were among the notable publications that later reposted the assertion that Mizuhara provided Okajima with interpretations.
However, the Red Sox are now disassociating themselves from Mizuhara in any way. It makes reasonable that they would wish to disassociate themselves from Mizuhara, given that Ohtani’s agents are allegedly now asking law authorities to look into allegations of a large-scale financial theft.
