On Sunday night, the visiting Montreal Canadiens defeated the struggling Seattle Kraken 5-1 thanks to two goals and two assists from Kaiden Guhle. Alex Newhook also scored twice.
For Montreal (26-32-12, 64 points), Mike Matheson scored as well as Nick Suzuki added a goal and an assist. This victory ended the team’s four-game losing run (0-2-2) and marked only their second victory in their previous eight games (2-4-2). Cayden Primeau, the goalie, made 36 saves.
Seattle (28-29-13, 69 points) was led by Jordan Eberle to a dismal eight-game skid (0-6-2), matching their season-worst. This effectively eliminated the Kraken from the Western Conference’s wild-card playoff race.
In the first eighteen minutes of play, the Canadiens scored four goals without a response on six shots, forcing Seattle’s starting goalie, Philipp Grubauer, from the game. The last 10 of the 11 shots were stopped by Joey Daccord.
At 4:18 in the first, Guhle scored the first goal. Before Grubauer could cover the puck with his catching glove, Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak unintentionally tipped his slap shot from the blue line past him. It deflected off Eberle’s stick and slid into the net.
At 6:22, Newhook doubled the lead by deflecting a high drive from Guhle inside the near post from the left point.
During a two-on-one rush at 17:33, Suzuki increased the lead by defeating Grubauer with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle.
At the eighteen-minute mark, Newhook scored his second goal. He did it by collecting a drop feed from Brendan Gallagher and shooting from the left faceoff circle between Grubauer’s pads.

56 seconds into the second period, Eberle put the Kraken on the scoreboard with a wrist shot that went into the net’s roof from the right faceoff circle.
Five minutes into the second half, a power play goal by Matty Beniers appeared to bring Seattle within 4-2, but Montreal assistant coach Trevor Letowski contested the call, and a review of the footage showed the Kraken were offside when they entered the offensive zone.
