Running backs coach Harvey Unga said that BYU’s running back group will probably not alter for the upcoming transfer portal session.
Unga stated that his scholarships are all filled as the last week of spring practice draws to a close and that neither offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick nor head coach Kalani Sitake have discussed adding anyone.
But until they don’t, things can stay the same.
In order to get more out of the roster, Unga claimed that BYU’s offense has undergone numerous additions and modifications. A large portion of these changes have been made with advice from new coaches TJ Woods and Keith Gilbright, who has knocked heads together with Roderick.
It’s been enjoyable. Jake Retzlaff is back, and Gerry Bohanon has joined us. I believe that A-Rod has been able to try a lot of new and different things, as well as open up a lot of things. Even though it’s spring ball and we play against the same guys every day, we’re having fun. At some point, it becomes challenging, but overall it’s been enjoyable, Unga said.
Miles Davis, Hinkley Ropati, Jovesa Damuni, Siona Moa, Pokalua Haunga, USU transfer Enock Nawahine, and freshman star LJ Martin are all back for BYU.
After Unga broke BYU’s all-time rushing record in his prime, his coach, Lance Reynolds, made an effort to keep Unga healthy by keeping an eye on his practice repetitions during the week to ensure he would be ready for action on game day.
Playing in the Big 12 has proven to be physically demanding for BYU, but Unga thinks his team has the players to succeed in this next second Big 12 season.
He will however exercise caution and keep an eye on their workload.
“I am incredibly appreciative of Coach Reynolds’ concern for me. On certain days, my soft tissue groin pull and contusions made it difficult for me to walk. On game day, he would accept whatever I brought, but he let me do everything I could. I’m going to treat these guys in the same way. Every week, they face frightening creatures. They responded to my challenge by training in the off-season to get ready,” he stated.
Unga stated his desire for all of his backs to be players on every play. “I want them to be able to play in there, regardless of the appearance of the package. It merely tells the defense what’s coming, therefore I don’t want a guy for this package and a player for another package. Everything will appear personnel-wise the same if all of our backs can play every down in every configuration, which provides us an advantage.
Unga claimed that his backs are generally in good condition. Due to injury, Ropati, Davis, and Martin missed the majority of the previous campaign.
