He was a high recruit who was considering Utah and BYU. He was born in Utah, He’s now on the transfer portal

Fans of the basketball programs at BYU and Utah knew Keanu Dawes well in October 2022. Dawes was regarded as an elite prospect, had grown up in the Beehive State until he moved to Houston when he was nine years old, and was debating signing with the Cougars or the Runnin’ Utes.

Dawes, the highest-rated prospect to ever enroll in the program, chose to remain in Houston and made a commitment to play for the Rice Owls.

Dawes, though, has reportedly entered the transfer portal following just one season with the Owls, according to a number of reports on Monday. (Dawes posted stories of the news on his social media platforms, but he did not personally announce it.)

The action was taken when Rice dismissed head coach Scott Pera and replaced him with Rob Lanier, a former coach at SMU.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Dawes participated in all 32 games for the Owls in his one and only season there, starting 23 of them. In 23.6 minutes per game, he averaged 4.1 rebounds and 6.6 points.

Dawes was debating five other colleges when he declared his commitment to Rice: BYU, Utah, Texas A&M, Texas, and Oklahoma State.

Dawes is the nephew of Derek Dawes, a BYU player who attended Cottonwood High in Salt Lake City to prepare for his career.
