Is Xavier Deserving of the Eagles? Though it may seem unlikely, some believe that the lightning-fast wide receiver will wear midnight green the following season as the 2024 NFL Draft approaches.
In 2021, Worthy traveled to Texas as a four-star recruit from Fresno, California. With 62 receptions, 981 yards, and 12 touchdowns as a rookie, including a career-long 75-yard touchdown versus Oklahoma, he led the team in receiving yards.
Both his 1,014 yards in 2023 and his 371 yards returning punts were career highs, but most people were first aware of him until he set a record with a 4.21 40-yard sprint at the NFL Scouting Combine.
When the Eagles met and broke down footage with Worthy in Indianapolis, he drew the interest of Philadelphia. Of course, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are perhaps the best wide receiving tandem in the NFL, but the Birds may try to enhance their No. 3 receiver.
And according to Pro Football Focus, that’s precisely what they will accomplish. Analyst Brad Spielberger uses Worthy’s awareness of angles and leverage in their most recent mock draft to justify Philadelphia selecting him at selection No. 22.
In this offense that needs to rebuild itself for 2024 and beyond, Worthy’s speed with the space created by A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith downfield could be deadly, especially as a speedy outlet against the blitz.
This is the reason why Spielberger’s draft is so unclear. He still has the team passing on excellent cornerbacks like Cooper DeJean of Iowa, Nate Wiggins of Clemson, and Kool-Aid McKinstry of Alabama, despite the team’s clear needs at safety and cornerback.
Longtime Eagle DeSean Jackson was a favorite of Worthy’s growing up, but with Brown and Smith in the lineup, the team doesn’t need another Jackson. However, Malcolm Jenkins or another Brian Dawkins will do.
