The Detroit Lions are coming off an impressive season where they narrowly missed making the Super Bowl, falling short in a tight NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. Looking ahead, the team has already made some moves in free agency to bolster their roster.
In terms of their secondary, they acquired cornerback Carlton Davis via trade and signed Amik Robertson. However, head coach Dan Campbell emphasized the need to further strengthen the safety position before the upcoming 2024 season during league meetings last week.
Campbell expressed the team’s continued pursuit of safety help, acknowledging the importance of competition in that area. The safety situation is somewhat uncertain with potential starters Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu dealing with offseason surgery and health issues, respectively.
Following CJ Gardner-Johnson’s season-ending injury, which left a void at safety, the Lions are exploring options. Campbell highlighted Brian Branch as a player who could transition to safety after performing well as a slot cornerback.
The Lions’ defense has room for improvement, having allowed an average of 22.1 points per game last season, with the secondary identified as a weak spot.
Notable free agent safeties like Quandre Diggs, Marcus Maye, and Justin Simmons are available, and the team could also address the secondary in the draft given the depth of talent in this year’s cornerback and safety class.
