Did Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney secure two of the NHL’s top contract extensions in recent history?
Sweeney faced criticism for salary cap constraints last offseason, but navigating the cap era and the challenges of a flattened salary cap due to COVID-19, Sweeney’s tenure has been exceptional. The Bruins have made the playoffs consistently under Sweeney’s leadership, appearing eight times in the last nine seasons.
Key to this success were the extensions of Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak in 2016 and 2017. Marchand’s eight-year, $49 million contract extension and Pastrnak’s six-year, $40 million deal have proven to be among the best in the league. Since signing, Marchand has excelled with multiple 30-goal seasons, and Pastrnak has become a premier goal scorer, hitting 30 goals almost every year, including a 61-goal season in 2021-22.
