Detroit Lions Will Take Same Approach to 2024 NFL Draft, Take the Best

The Detroit Lions are sticking to their tried-and-true draft strategy for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, despite their success in reaching the NFC Championship last season.

General manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell emphasized to Eric Woodyard of ESPN that they will prioritize selecting the best available player, rather than focusing solely on team needs.

Holmes emphasized the importance of avoiding the “needs train” mentality during the draft, pointing out that free agency is the appropriate time to address specific roster gaps.

Both Holmes and Campbell have consistently applied a “best player available” approach since joining the Lions in 2021.

Their draft history reflects this philosophy, with impactful selections like Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Aidan Hutchinson, and Jameson Williams over the past three years.

Despite the team’s recent success, the Lions are committed to maintaining their draft strategy, aiming to secure impact players who can contribute immediately and strengthen their roster for the future.
