Jordan Mailata, an offensive tackle, was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles through 2028 on Thursday.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mailata and the Eagles have agreed on a three-year, $66 million contract that includes a $20 million signing bonus and a $48 million guarantee.
Along with left guard Landon Dickerson, who signed a large new contract this offseason, the Eagles’ former seventh-round choice from 2018 was not the only player on the offensive line to receive an extension.
The Eagles will still make an effort to fortify the trenches in the forthcoming 2024 NFL Draft, even though they already have those positions and the majority of the offensive line locked up for 2023.
According to ESPN’s Matt Miller, the Eagles might be a “sneaky” club and pass on their many defensive needs in order to choose an offensive tackle with their first-round pick.
Miller notes that the Birds may seek a player like Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton at No. 22 overall due to the Eagles general manager Howie Roseman’s draft history, Lane Johnson’s advanced age, and Jason Kelce’s retirement.
Even with Jordan Mailata’s deal on Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles are still a dangerous offensive tackle team to watch in Round 1. More aggressively and better than anybody else in football, general manager Howie Roseman drafts ahead of need while also using premium picks to build through the trenches. Don’t be surprised if a player like Oklahoma’s Guyton is tabbed as a Week 1 starting right guard and an eventual replacement for right tackle Lane Johnson, who is about to begin his 34th season, with center Jason Kelce retiring this summer, according to ESPN’s Matt Miller.
The Eagles intend to invite Guyton on a top-30 visit this month after expressing interest in him and meeting with him at the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
In addition, Guyton revealed to reporters at the Senior Bowl that he has communication with another Oklahoma graduate, Lane Johnson.
Johnson has a great deal of meaning for Guyton. “As a right tackle, I believe he is the greatest right tackle in football history. I speak with him frequently. He’s developed into a big brother-like mentor to me. Additionally, picking his brains improves me and gives me more of a challenge to improve. Like a friendship between a big brother and a small brother.”
Guyton, who can play left or right tackle, is regarded as one of the most physically gifted offensive tackles in this year’s draft class.
He is expected to be selected on Day 1 or early in Day 2 of the draft due to his outstanding pass protection and versatility.
Guyton allowed zero sacks on 335 pass-blocking snaps during his final and only season with the Sooners (per PFF).
Two years before he announced his retirement, in 2022, the Eagles allowed Kelce to select Cam Jurgens as his replacement at center. As Johnson begins his twelfth NFL season with the team, it’s possible that Howie is making plans for the future and encouraging him to do the same.
