Mitch Marner had a triumphant return to the ice with the Toronto Maple Leafs last night after recovering from an ankle injury sustained on March 7.
In his comeback game against the Montreal Canadiens, Marner contributed an assist in the team’s victory.
Despite the extended absence, he logged over 17 minutes of playing time, providing a much-needed boost to the team as they approach the end of the regular season and prepare for the playoffs.
Notably, Marner’s assist propelled him past Tomas Kaberle into fifth place for all-time assists in Maple Leafs franchise history. At just 26 years old and completing his eighth season with the Maple Leafs, Marner is on track to surpass Borje Salming’s record and claim the top spot in franchise history in less than four seasons.
Marner is chasing other Maple Leafs legends on his ascent to the franchise assist leaderboard. Borje Salming holds the top spot with 620 assists, remembered for his pioneering role as one of the first Swedish NHL players and his exceptional skills.
Mats Sundin, known for his leadership and scoring prowess, follows with 567 assists, leaving a lasting legacy despite limited playoff success.
Darryl Sittler, revered for his playmaking abilities and historic 10-point game in 1976, ranks third with 527 assists, embodying dedication and leadership during his tenure with the Maple Leafs.
