Dalvin Cook’s 2023 season did not go as expected, as the former Pro Bowler struggled to find a significant role in the Jets’ offense. Consequently, it has been a relatively quiet offseason for the veteran free agent, but this hasn’t changed his approach.
In a conversation with Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston, Cook expressed optimism about his physical condition and believes he can still be a productive offensive player. He feels that his limited playing time with the Jets last year will actually benefit him in 2024.
“I’ve got it all,” Cook said confidently. “The tools are still here. I didn’t really get many reps last year. So, the legs are fresh, and the resume speaks for itself. I’m still Dalvin Cook. I’m still that guy. For me, I don’t like to boast. I just like to go out there, put my helmet on and line up on the grass.”
After a successful six-year tenure in Minnesota, Cook was released last offseason. Despite consistently surpassing 1,300 yards from scrimmage each season from 2019 to 2022, it took until mid-August for Cook to join the Jets, where he was expected to share the backfield with Breece Hall.
However, Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury disrupted their plans, and the Jets’ offense struggled for consistency throughout 2023. As a result, Cook was relegated to a backup role, starting only one game out of 15 appearances and finishing with 292 yards from scrimmage and no touchdowns.
Cook and the Jets parted ways late in the season, and he joined the Ravens for the postseason, where he had limited opportunities with eight touches in one game, totaling 23 yards.
Despite the active market for running backs in free agency this year, Cook has not attracted much attention. There were rumors about his interest in joining the Cowboys, but it was unclear if they reciprocated. Nevertheless, Cook remains confident that he can contribute effectively to any running back group.
“Yeah, you always have to be prepared for the opportunity,” Cook emphasized. “I’m a veteran in the league. I know what it takes to succeed here. I know who Dalvin Cook is and how I want to perform. Like you said, stay ready so you don’t have to get ready.”
