Since Trevor Story joined the Red Sox in March 2022, his time with Boston has been plagued by setbacks.
Story, known for playing at least 142 games in four seasons with the Colorado Rockies from 2017-2021 (excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 season), saw his playing time drastically reduced with Boston. In 2022, he appeared in just 94 games, followed by a career-low 43 games in 2023 due to a right UCL injury.
Hoping to put his injury woes behind him in 2024, Story faced another setback when he dislocated his left shoulder while diving for a ground ball against the Los Angeles Angels. This injury landed him on the 10-day injured list, and subsequent comments from Red Sox manager Alex Cora hinted at more serious issues with his elbow. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow later confirmed that Story requires surgery to repair a fractured glenoid, sidelining him for approximately six months, effectively ending his regular season.
When Story signed a six-year, $140 million deal with Boston, he was coming off a challenging 2021 season in Colorado. Despite this, he managed 24 home runs, 75 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. Story’s standout year was in 2018, where he achieved career highs in numerous categories, including home runs (37), RBI (108), hits (174), doubles (42), stolen bases (27), and slugging percentage (.567). He also earned the first of two consecutive Silver Slugger awards and finished eighth in the NL MVP voting.
In response to Story’s absence, the Red Sox are looking to fill the void at shortstop with various players, including Vaughn Grissom, a 23-year-old acquired from the Atlanta Braves in a trade involving seven-time All-Star pitcher Chris Sale and cash in late December.
