Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, has amassed an excessive amount of individual awards in his trophy case throughout his first six years in the NFL. But the most significant one, a team award, has escaped him.
Cam Newton, the former MVP of the league, recently discussed the issue on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast. Shannon Sharpe, a former tight end for the Ravens and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, questioned him about which player—Jackson, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy, Jordan Love, Justin Herbert, and Dak Prescott—he thinks will win a Super Bowl first.
Without pausing, Newton said, “Lamar.”
In addition to being named to three Pro Bowls, earning two First-Team All-Pro selections, and leading his team to two successful seasons in which they finished with the best record in the league and the top seed in the AFC playoffs, Jackson’s already Hall of Fame-worthy resume includes these accolades.
In a 2023 season when they were by far the best and most complete team with multiple decisive victories over playoff teams and elite contenders, Newton was asked why he thinks Jackson and the Ravens struggled to finally get over the hump last season.
Newton remarked, “I think winning the ugly games is something that Lamar and the Ravens organization just need to figure out.” “It’s one of those things where, bro, stop thinking,” sometimes occurs when I look at Lamar.”
It is “easy” for players with Jackson’s level of talent to overthink things in the heat of the moment, according to Newton, who knows this from experience having been one before injuries started to wear him out. He likened Jackson’s lack of decisiveness in pivotal playoff games against formidable opponents to a chef who is too used to producing their signature dish under ideal conditions and finds it difficult to do so when forced to alter or improvise upon it.
