Raiders Fall Hard Against the Broncos
Rainfall has caused the Canberra Raiders to lose 34-10 to the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium this evening. The host team jumped out to a five-try to nil lead in the first half, with Canberra’s high completion percentage and important playmaker Jamal Fogarty’s biceps injury causing concern for the green machine.
The Raiders had the advantage in field position for the first ten minutes of the game thanks to their impressive start. During this dominating drive, the Raiders appeared to have taken the lead, but Hudson Young was unable to ground the ball after Danny Levi’s well-timed kick. Even though the visitors had the better of the first half, Reece Walsh’s solo effort saw the Broncos take the lead after he cut through the defense, outpacing three opponents and reaching the try line.
Young fullback Chevy Stewart made a mistake that resulted in a tussle for the ball on the try line. James Schiller’s boot kept the Raiders from giving up in back-to-back sets. Early on, the Brisbane halves were on fire. Ezra Mam’s cross-field kick allowed Jordan Riki to cross, and then Jock Madden’s huge midfield bomb caused the Raiders number one to make a mistake. The Broncos five-eighth toed the ball and ground it in goal.
Billy Walters recovered his own kick to score the home team’s fourth of the game, giving the Raiders a 24-0 lead. The Raiders would find it difficult to stop the Broncos’ momentum. Reece Walsh punished a mistake by the Raiders by slicing through Canberra’s right side defense to score his second goal of the game, extending the Broncos’ lead in the first half.
The Raiders had plenty of work ahead of them in the second forty minutes, as they ended the half behind 28 to 0.
