The courageous choice Warrington Wolves made to name Sam Burgess as Daryl Powell’s replacement appears to be paying off, as the Wire are now dominating Super League.
Wire had a record of five wins and two losses going into today’s match against Leigh Leopards, with both of those losses coming against Catalans Dragons and by slim margins. Today’s close 16-14 victory further improved that record.
They also easily advanced to the Challenge Cup semifinals following their dominating performance against St. Helens at The Totally Wicked Stadium last week, winning 31-8 thanks to a strong second half.
Naturally, Sam Burgess has received a lot of acclaim, and with good reason—the rookie head coach hopes to have changed the atmosphere at The Halliwell Jones Stadium and have fans questioning if this is actually their year.
Due to his appreciation, the NRL has taken notice. Reports from Australia indicate that the Englishman’s former team, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, may be planning a move to sign him, with pressure mounting on current head coach Jason Demetriou.
After being questioned about the links in real time on Sky Sports prior to today’s game, Sam Burgess has finally spoken out about them.
After mentioning the mounting pressure on Jason Demetriou, Sky Sports host Jenna Brooks posed the question, “If the opportunity was to come up for a potential move back to the NRL, could anything at this point in time make you move back?”
Sam Burgess responded to that with a firm “No, none whatsoever.” This is a two-year contract, which I will honor.
