Surprise revelation as Panthers’ forward shopped to Broncos

The Penrith Panthers have reportedly surprised many by offering Luke Garner, a second-rower and centre, to the Brisbane Broncos.

Garner, who will be off-contract at the end of the year, played 17 games for the Panthers after moving from the Wests Tigers, where he spent the first part of his NRL career (2018-2022), totaling 75 games.

Although Garner wasn’t a regular in Penrith’s starting lineup last year, he featured in 12 games for the reigning premiers, proving his worth whenever he played.

According to News Corp, Penrith recently proposed Garner’s transfer to the Broncos, who are in need of a second-rower. However, the Broncos declined the offer despite their search for players in this position.

The Broncos are reportedly eyeing Jack Gosiewski from the North Queensland Cowboys, who has requested a release due to personal reasons. Brisbane’s depth issues were further compounded by the departure of Kurt Capewell to the New Zealand Warriors at the end of the 2024 pre-season and Brendan Piakura’s recent injury absence.

Despite having roster spots available, the Broncos opted not to immediately sign Garner. With just seven months remaining on his contract, Garner’s future at Penrith seems uncertain, especially considering the team’s salary cap constraints. The 28-year-old may be looking for a new club.
