With a star-studded team, the New York Rangers had the best record in the NHL during the regular season. Artemi Panarin, a forward, is a possible MVP. Adam Fox is one of the league’s best defensemen at his position. At worst, Igor Shesterkin is one of the top two goalies. They also have Alexis Lafreniere, a recent No. 1 overall choice who enjoyed a breakthrough year.
One could argue that none of those guys are Madison Square Garden’s current fan favorites.
That title most certainly goes to rookie fourth-line forward Matt Rempe, who has developed into a kind of a Broadway cult figure thanks to his enormous stature, powerful hits, and readiness to take on all of the NHL’s top players.
In the first game of the Rangers’ Eastern Conference series against the Washington Capitals on Sunday afternoon, he scored the team’s first goal of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, adding another play to his list of fan favorites.
Even though Rempe only appeared in 17 games during the regular season, Madison Square Garden was filled with cheers as supporters called for him to play hockey.
Given that he is a frequent offender and frequently skates on the edge of being dirty, his true on-ice worth is undoubtedly debatable.
Rempe has likely received at least one or two more hits that may have led to more penalties in addition to his one suspension already. He does, however, provide an almost unparalleled level of intensity and plays a solid defensive game. There are numerous benefits and drawbacks.
