Despite suffering an injury, the Broncos outperformed the Tigers.
With their fast start, the Broncos missed their first chance when Deine Mariner dropped the ball with the line wide open due to space opening up on the outside. However, the second attempt was successful since Mariner was only able to score by staying inside the playing field. The Broncos persisted in concentrating on that area of the field, but they were unable to obtain the final pass or kick to go in Mariner’s direction. When Samuela Fainu botched Corey Oates, who was heading for a fast 20-meter restart, the youngster was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul. The Tigers were in a desperate situation with little offensive firepower.
A few minutes later, the Broncos scored thanks to a flawless kick by Adam Reynolds for Reece Walsh; however, Jock Madden scored for the visitors instead of Walsh due to the ball’s favorable bounce. The Tigers believed they had a try despite being outplayed handily, but Peter Gough in the bunker pulled out all the stops as Api Koroisau’s attempt was foiled by the ball slipping out of his hand and being judged not to have regathered it before grounding it.
Reece Walsh demonstrated his attacking prowess by scoring by going back to the middle of the field, adding insult to injury for the Tigers after their try was disallowed. Brisbane led 16-0 at halftime thanks to an early Adam Reynolds goal. A stupid penalty called by the Tigers in the first minute of the second half gave the visitors good field position, which they took advantage of when Jock Madden scored his second try of the game.
