A large paperbark tree is facing a significant period of suspension after being charged with serious contact during a recent incident.
The tree, part of the myrtaceae team, may be sidelined for up to 8 weeks, although this could be reduced to 6 weeks with an early admission of guilt.
The NRL Match Review Committee found the tree’s contact with Paul Kent’s head to be reckless, high, and late. The incident occurred outside Tottis Rozelle, where Kent was hit by the tree while engaging with another person.
Kent underwent a Head Injury Assessment and is now following NRL360’s concussion protocol. The timeline for his return is uncertain, and there are concerns it could lead to his early retirement.
The tree’s defense may argue that Kent was falling when the contact happened, potentially reducing the ban by a week or two. Additionally, the tree’s clean record will be considered in the effort to reduce the suspension.
