Although Ivan Cleary expressed sympathy to Jason Demetriou following his dismissal by South Sydney, it will not affect Penrith’s preparation for their match on Thursday night.
Demetriou ended a checkered time at the Rabbitohs on Tuesday night, putting them at the foot of the standings following a dismal start to the season.
Speaking to the media before the round nine match, Cleary—who had himself been fired by a team—acknowledged that Demetriou’s circumstances are never simple.
Of course, losing your job and having it so widely reported are two things. I’m really sorry for those guys. On the one hand, it’s unpleasant, but you know what you’re getting into.
“I’m not privy to all the details, but I definitely feel for him.”
After being fired by the Panthers, Cleary’s coaching career briefly looked like it was in disarray. However, he was able to get back on his feet with the Wests Tigers before going back to the foot of the Alps and leading them to three consecutive titles.
Despite the drama unfolding at Redfern, the defending premiers’ attention will not be deflected, and Cleary acknowledged the difficult task that lies ahead of them at Accor Stadium.
Nathan Cleary, the outstanding halfback, is inexplicably unable to play on Thursday.
