Sherrone Moore, the first head coach of Michigan football, will have his work cut out for him this season as the Wolverines’ 2024 schedule is routinely rated as one of the hardest in the country.
Michigan’s autumn schedule includes games against Texas, USC, Ohio State, Penn State, and Oregon. Washington, the team that defeated Michigan in the National Championship Game the previous season, is also scheduled to play.
Moore recently shared his favourite play call from his time as offensive coordinator for former head coach Jim Harbaugh while working on the sidelines.
The play happened in the Rose Bowl (which served as a CFP semifinal last season) against SEC champ Alabama and it broke a game wide open that looked like it was headed for an inevitable conclusion in favor of the Crimson Tide.
On fourth-and-2 with 3:16 remaining in the fourth quarter and Michigan trailing 20-13, Moore dialed up a play that will live on for decades as one of the Wolverines’ greatest offensive calls of all-time: a pass in the flat to RB Blake Corum that turned into a big gain and set up a game-tying touchdown.
Moore’s choice for his favorite play-call was relayed by On3 reporter Clayton Sayfie on X, as originally revealed on the Wolverines-focused “In the Trenches” podcast.
The win drew the Wolverines to 3-3 all-time vs. national powerhouse Alabama and preceded the retirement of legendary Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.
Michigan won the game by a final score of 27-20 in overtime, punching the program’s ticket to the college football season’s final game and an eventual national championship.
Moore will begin his first season as Michigan’s head coach on August 31 against the Fresno State Bulldogs at the Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It will be the Derby, Kansas, native’s first year at the helm of the Wolverines ship after spending the final four games of Michigan’s 2023 regular season filling in for a suspended Harbaugh.
But as Fornelli explained, Moore is not a typical first-year head coach based on the experience he gained last season. If Moore can rediscover his play-calling magic from last season’s Alabama and Washington games, the sky is limit for his 2024 Wolverines – even with quarterback J.J. McCarthy now a Minnesota Viking and Corum a Los Angeles Rams.
