Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Godrick, Chiefs offensive linemen, were detained on misdemeanour marijuana possession charges Thursday evening, according to ESPN.
Both players were arrested at 11:44 p.m. CT on Thursday, jailed at 1:51 a.m. on Friday, and released just after 4 p.m. after posting a $2,500 bond, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. Marijuana possession is banned in Kansas.
According to ESPN, the Chiefs are aware of the arrests but declined to speak further. Morris, who was taken by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, appeared in 14 games and made four starts as a rookie.
Morris made five special teams plays in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVIII triumph.
Other Chiefs players have faced controversy and legal issues lately. Wide receiver Rashee Rice is currently confronting eight felony charges, a $1 million lawsuit, and is expected to receive an NFL suspension for his role in a multi-car crash, allegedly while racing a Lamborghini in April. Following a warrant for his arrest, Rice surrendered to the police. He is also under investigation for striking a photographer at a local Dallas Nightclub.
Kicker Harrison Butker sparked controversy with his commencement speech at Benedictine College. He received backlash for his views, including stating that a woman’s most important role is being a homemaker and criticizing Pride Month as a “deadly sin.” He also made pointed comments about President Joe Biden, the LGBTQIA+ community, abortion, IVF, and the response to Covid-19. Neither Butker nor Benedictine College have spoken publicly about the outcry to the address.
Subsequently, some students voiced their offense at his remarks, as reported by NBC News.
“My jaw dropped at one point. It was just very uncomfortable, and I was looking back and forth at some of my friends and we were like, this is just not the time and place for this at all,” said Graphic Design graduate Susannah Leisegang.
The Chiefs start their season in primetime against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5th. The game will be broadcast on NBC.
